About the Norfolk Fire Department Federal Credit Union
The Norfolk Fire Department Federal Credit Union (NFDFCU) was originally founded by Mr. Frank Talley and chartered on April 28, 1940 and organized as a cooperative financial institution. The credit union was originally founded to provide Firefighters and their families with an alternative to high cost financial services, which were available only through banks at that time.
The credit union operated out of the back of a station wagon, driven by Chief Thorne. He would go from station to station, collecting deposits and loan payments, and signing off on passbooks. You could also go to his home on Grandy Avenue and conduct business at his kitchen table.
The credit union was then moved to an unused room as part of Norfolk Fire Station #10, where the credit committee, board and few staff members would meet and make decisions affecting the credit union members.
On August 4, 1975, there was a groundbreaking ceremony to build an addition to Fire Station #10, thereby creating the actual Credit Union building, where it remains today.
The credit union’s Field of Membership has changed over the years, by encompassing Norfolk Fire and Rescue members as well as their families. The credit union also has Small Employee Groups (SEG) such as the Norfolk Police Union, Norfolk Airport, Virginia Beach Firefighter’s Union, churches and other small groups.
